candles have been lit in Israel and around the world
0

This year, as every year, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, we invite you to join millions of households in Israel and worldwide

in lighting a personal memorial candle in memory of one of the six million who perished in the Holocaust.

Lighting a candle together with family and friends, and speaking about the person in whose memory you light it, creates a moment of connection, a chance to connect with a life that others tried to erase.

In doing so, we help keep their memory alive and ensure that the collective remembrance of the six million endures for generations.

Soon, sadly, no survivors will remain to tell their stories in their own voices. The torch of remembrance is being placed in our hands now - to hold, to honor, and to carry forward.

Choose whom to remember:
A relative, a hero, or someone you don’t know -
And light a candle to keep their memory alive.

“What will happen when there are no more Holocaust survivors to tell their stories?

Maybe you are the only hope I have - make it come true.”

A memorial candle for every victim

In an unprecedented collaboration between "Shem VeNer" and "Yad Vashem", it was possible to provide a personal memory for each of the six million victims.

This shared effort allows anyone to light a personal memorial candle that carries the name and story of a victim, turning their memory from something distant into a living, tangible tradition –

a meaningful step toward keeping their memory alive for generations.

Together, We Ignite Memory:
Activities, Projects, and Partners

The Shem Vaner Names Database now includes more than half a million names, gathered with the help of the public - survivors, family members, students, and communities, and in cooperation with Yad Vashem. Since the organization was founded in 2013, millions of personal memorial candles have been lit - in private homes, schools, at Yad Vashem, in public authorities, IDF units, the Knesset, the President’s Residence, and at a wide range of organizations, companies, and institutions.

Each candle carries the story of a victim on its label and scannable barcode, turning remembrance into something living, personal, and tangible.

Today, personal memorial candles can be lit in three languages: Hebrew, English, and Spanish.
Shem Vaner strengthens this growing tradition through partnerships with the education system, Yad Vashem, Meta Israel, the Israel Police, and leading influencers, continuing to expand the circle of remembrance in Israel and around the world.
